Chemical Biology is a specialization offered within Ontario Tech University's Chemistry program, leading to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. The program examines how chemistry is applied to questions of biological importance, covering the synthesis and use of small molecules, probes and chemically-modified macromolecules. Students study the major fields of chemistry — physical, analytical, organic, inorganic and chemical biology — using modern laboratory and teaching facilities to build hands-on experimental skills. The curriculum develops problem-solving abilities applicable to drug discovery, biological systems research and related scientific fields. Graduates are prepared for further study in medicine, law, business, education or research-based Master of Science and PhD programs. A direct-entry co-op option is available, combining academic study with paid work terms through Ontario Tech's co-operative education program. Students interested in management can extend their studies into the five-year Bachelor of Science and Management (Honours) program, which adds a foundation in finance, accounting, operations, project management and marketing alongside the science curriculum.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits, including English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and two of Biology (SBI4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U). A combined minimum 70 per cent average in prerequisite math and science courses is required; it is recommended that all four of MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and SPH4U be taken. Admission is competitive and the specific average required varies from year to year; students are selected based on school marks, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects relevant to the program. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Last year's cut-off was 70 per cent, with an expected cut-off in the low 70s.
