Marine Biology is a specialization within Ontario Tech University's Biological Science program, leading to a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. Students study marine ecosystems and organisms, from the largest animals to the smallest, and build foundational knowledge and laboratory skills before a semester abroad at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), where they study coral reefs and marine ecosystems near the Sargasso Sea using BIOS facilities, including its research vessel. Program fees, housing and meals for the Bermuda semester are set and paid directly to BIOS, at approximately $20,000 USD. Students apply directly to the specialization through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC code DMB for the regular program, DBL for co-op), with a direct-entry co-op option combining coursework with paid work terms. Students interested in management can extend their studies into the five-year Bachelor of Science and Management (Honours) program alongside the science curriculum.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits, including English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and two of Biology (SBI4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U), will be considered for admission. A combined minimum 70 per cent average in prerequisite math and science courses is required; it is recommended that all four of MCV4U, SBI4U, SCH4U and SPH4U be taken. Admission is competitive and the specific average required varies from year to year; students are selected based on school marks, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects relevant to the program. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Last year's cut-off was 70 per cent, with an expected cut-off in the low 70s.
