Trades - Apprenticeship in Plumber Apprenticeship

The Plumber Apprenticeship at Red Deer Polytechnic is a four-year program training students to plan, install and service plumbing systems, fixtures, piping equipment and controls used to transport water, waste, gases and hot liquids, with technical training conducted largely in shop settings. Apprentices not already certified in Alberta as a Gasfitter Class A or B complete a program that combines both the Plumber and Gasfitter Class B trades. Each of the four 12-month training periods includes eight weeks of classroom instruction, delivered mostly on-campus, and a minimum of 1,560 hours of on-the-job training annually. Students must achieve a weighted average of 65%, with no section under 50%, and a minimum grade of 70% on the AIT Provincial Exam for each period. Graduates receive an Advanced Diploma-level Journeyperson Certificate and become eligible for the interprovincial Red Seal endorsement. Students may later specialize in areas such as water conditioning, hydronic heating and chilled water systems.
