The Steamfitter/Pipefitter Apprenticeship at Red Deer Polytechnic is a four-period apprenticeship leading to journeyperson certification in Alberta's steamfitter/pipefitter trade. Steamfitters/pipefitters lay out, assemble, and maintain piping systems that move steam, water, chemicals, and fuel through facilities ranging from heating plants to manufacturing operations. Students learn to read blueprints, fabricate and install piping, and apply welding and rigging techniques, alongside training in safety procedures, pressure testing, and system diagnostics. Each classroom period alternates with on-the-job work experience through Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training system, preparing graduates for work in sectors such as oil and gas, construction, and heavy industry. On completion, graduates receive a Journeyperson Certificate, granting legal authority to work in the trade, and an Education Credential recognizing completion of the diploma-level apprenticeship program.
